All my Paint.NET creations. Tips? Suggestions?

Hello everyone!

I enjoy putting together forum signitures for many members on the forums that I use, but my sigs really don't come close to what I've seen others do in Photoshop and GIMP. I don't really know what I need help on specificly, so I will post the sigs that I am most proud of and if y'all could give me some tips and suggestions?

Hi Chuck38 !

I have downloaded two of your siggies to my netbook, and tried my best to figure up the solutions for you.

Hopefully it can help you a lot.

Put original siggies and these siggies side by side, can you note the difference ?

Which one you prefer most ?

If you like the changes, here are the solutions for all of it :

1. Open the PNG image in Paint,NET.

2. Duplicate the layer and set the duplicated layer's blending mode to screen mode. Tweak the transparency to adjust the brightness. ( This is a non-destructive way of adjusting the brightness )

3. Duplicate the layer again, and set the duplicated layer blending mode to overlay mode. Tweak the transparency settings to adjust the contrast. ( This is a non-destructive way to adjust the contrast )

4. Flatten the image and save to png or just save it to pdn format firstly before that ( if you still want to adjust those layers few weeks or few months later ). If you like to enhance the details, just follow the instructions on contrast mask tutorial.

Contrast mask tutorial : http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/28721-photo-contrast-mask/?p=418112

5. If you wish, just smart sharpening the edges using this tutorial :

http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/28757-how-to-do-a-smart-sharpening-with-layering-technique/?p=418113

Hoping that this way can help !

Cheerio !

Your signatures are very nice, and I can't help feeling you're on the brink of a major leap forward with them.  I believe that the technique you need to learn is composition.  This is the technique of assembling components into a cohesive whole.  At the moment your sigs look too formal and structured.

Tips:

1. Try making some abstract sigs.  These will help you concentrate on flow rather than specific elements.

2.  This tutorial is one of my favorites.  Read it several times  http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/16799-faith-signature-tutorial-render-sig/  See how more work goes into the background that the foreground element?  This produces a very professional result.

3.  This was a must-read, until the images were lost.  You might still learn something from the text  http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/12216-the-ultimate-guide-to-tags-text-design-by-yipp-824/

Thanks to everyone for the tips! :)

Nai, I'll be sure to do that in my next sig. :)

Ego, thank-you so much for those tutorials! I think they will help me significantly! :D

DeathSpecteR, I have realized that I do need to use the a time-aliasing more. ;)

I cheated on that image a little bit.

I like to use these two plugins in various orders to "smooth" edges.

--AA's_Assistant @ dpy-plugins
for this plugin, I usually find basicly the default setting is best for most, but it does eat away at the image.
Not recomended for really narrow lines and such, but maybe you can use a thicker line and it will slim it down.

--DropShadow @ Vandermotten-plugins
I like this one, it can outline, shadow and everything. I usually start off with the settings
turned down to 1 low and raise it up as needed.

I thought there was a plugin for turning images into a vector or close to it. I'm not sure.

Hope this all makes sense.

good luck, carry on.

Good work on these I really do like them. I always wanted to be good at these sigs.

I have the drop shadow plugin, but I haven't quite figured it out. I need to download the AA Assistant, it looks like it would be very helpful. :)

Thanks! If you like my sigs, you really need to see what these other members can do!

I hope it's alright to link to other forums. If I'm not suppose to, let me know and I will remove the links. :P

Hey, cool stuff. It looks like you have your own style, which is cool because it keeps things personal and different. :)

To answer your question about sig sizes, see the forum rules, # 15 http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/2932-read-first-the-rules-yes-you-read-this-2013-12-21/#entry412771

Yes, I do have a little of my own style. But its common to see sigs kinda like mine in the other forums I use. They really emphasize the username over there. ;)

Thanks for the link! :)

Much improved on the last 2. Great to see you take on board the advice.

Feather - BoltBait's plugin & AAAssistant are very valuable tools.

I generally work on a canvas 4x bigger than the end result. This gives me plenty of leeway with above plugins as well as using Gaussian Blur at low value - say 1 or 2.

Snoopy as a vampire! Who'd have thought :P

I have the feather plugin, I'll download the AA Asistance! :)

I've heard that it is good to work with a larger canvas, but does it cause any trouble when you have to resize it?

Thanks! I didn't draw Snoopy, I found some images on Google. ;)

Hi Chuck38,
The halloween one looks good! - you could possibly add a fiery glow to the text to make it stand out from the background a little more? - I like the text being behind the trees though!
I'm no expert on 'sigs' and they all look good to me. ;)

However, that's a long ways away. Especialy if I deicide to stick with PDN. ;)
