ScifiGirl
I've been using Paint.net now for a little over a week and so far, with a few struggles, I am very happy. There was one thing I noticed though that is lacking, which is common to both PS and Gimp; that is variables with the eraser. Things such as shape, hardness etc etc. If any of you have used PS, you will know what I mean. Is this possible at all? Quote "Geek is me"
pdnnoob
If you use the v4.0 beta, you can adjust the hardness of the eraser. Also, in both v3.5 and v4.0, you can adjust the transparency of the eraser by changing your color transparency. The other options, however, are not available in paint.net as of now. See the Popular Feature Requests thread for details. 1 Quote No, Paint.NET is not spyware...but, installing it is an IQ test. ~BoltBait Blend modes are like the filling in your sandwich. ScifiGirl
That's a good start, thank you Noob.. I have 3.5.11 and yep, its there. I didn't load the beta version of 4.0 simply because my laptop is rather crappy Quote "Geek is me"
nortok00
I would like to throw in my "thumbs up" for a square eraser tool. I have found some great workarounds but when you're working with straight lines at odd angles it's just easier to have a square eraser. I went to that feature request page and didn't see anything about different shapes for the eraser. Am I going blind and it's on there? I'm on 4.0.5 of PDN. Thanks.
pdnnoob
As of now, there's only circles for the eraser. If you turn off antialias, you can get a 3x3 pixel square with brush size set to 3. There are other workarounds, as you point out, and each one has its purpose. For example, I like to use the line tool set to a fully transparent color using the overwrite blend mode. You can use the same settings on the shape tool too. Quote No, Paint.NET is not spyware...but, installing it is an IQ test. ~BoltBait Blend modes are like the filling in your sandwich. wolfwoman
Hey all, just arrived here and ..... I am a little surprised and somewhat disappointed that nothing new has been added for two years. I am running v 4.0.10 of PDN, and the eraser tool is still a circle. Has nobody really addressed this, or am I just missing something because nobody is talking about it anymore? TIA for any info. I see the workarounds and can do them, but ugh. Just as time-consuming as clicking one pixel at a time.
Rick Brewster
I'm just 1 person and I can only do so much. Look at the release log ( http://www.getpaint.net/roadmap.html ) and you'll see a million other things that've been done in the past 2 years. It's just a priority queue. Things do or don't make it to to the top for any number of reasons. There's no specific reason why adding additional brush shapes hasn't been done yet. 4 Quote The Paint.NET Blog: https://blog.getpaint.net/ Donations are always appreciated! https://www.getpaint.net/donate.html
Rick Brewster
Also, to elaborate on the technical side of things: the new brush engine in 4.0 can easily support a square (etc.) brush shape. It's more of a UI problem that needs to be solved here. And the UI problem is mostly "the UI for it doesn't exist yet, and it takes time to design, code, and test it." 1 Quote The Paint.NET Blog: https://blog.getpaint.net/ Donations are always appreciated! https://www.getpaint.net/donate.html

I was genuinely asking for information because (as I said) I just arrived. I'm not trying to scold anyone! I was actually honestly surprised the thread abruptly stopped two years ago. Thanks for the explanation in your follow-up post.
