when I saved an image in Paint.net, it saved it as a MS-DOS application, even though I selected a JPEG as the file type. Anyone know why this could be? thanks

Your OS is probably set to wrongly associate JPEGs with the command prompt. Right-click on one of the files, select open with -> choose default program and choose an image viewer.
