All of a sudden paint.net is freezing and not letting me open any photos.

It was working this morning and now all of a sudden its not. It works in safe mode. I have checked at least one of my virus scans and nothing.

No there is not. I discovered that I can drag a picture from my picture folder and alter it and save it. But when I go to the menu bar and click open it freezes. And I can't create a new picture.

It only hangs when you go to File->Open?

My guess is you have a buggy Windows shell extension, like maybe a thumbnail provider for DivX movies.

If this is the case, whatever folder it's trying to boot up the Open folder in likely has a file that's tripping up that thumbnail provider.

Or this folder in question could be on a slow network path or a jittery external hard drive that won't wake up properly (probably not that last one though).

And if you really gotta know which folder this is because you can't remember and/or you're not psychic, open up Registry Editor (regedit). Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Paint.NET and then find the little key called LastFileDialogDirectory. Then you can open up the directory it's talking about and investigate. And, you can delete it or change it to point to somewhere else. SImplest would just be "C:\" (without the quotes though).

Anyway that's my hypothesis.

Its working now. I made the directory point to My pictures and changed a folder name and moved some pictures cus that folder also was freezing up. Thanks for the help.

I have incurred the same problem. When I go to open a file in paint.net, the program crashes. (The same occurs when I attempt to open a file in MS Paint) I went into the registry as you directed but there is no LastFileDialogDirectory in the registry. Although I am confident this is the problem, I'll include the log:
