Metalize, AA's Assistant

Align Object

Alpha Mask

Gradient Mapping

Demo.

Open a new canvas of 200x500.

Fill the background with black, make the layer not visible, make a new layer.

Add some 108 size text, Gaussian Blur @ 1 radius, AA's Assistant at default, name the layer "Mask".

======================================

Copy the Mask layer into the clipboard.

On your keyboard, press:

Ctrl + A

Ctrl + C

Ctrl + D

This will select All of the layer, Copy the selection into the Windows clipboard, and Deselect.

Make the Mask layer not visible.

Position a new layer below the Mask layer, fill it with a vertical linear gradient of Hex C0C0C0 to Hex A0A0A0.

Name the layer "Text".

======================================

Apply Alpha Mask with all checkboxes filled.

image3[1].png

======================================

With the Shift key down, Magic Wand the alpha outside the text,

Invert selection (Ctrl+Shift+I)

Make a new layer and apply Bevel Selection at default settings.

image5[1].png

======================================

Deselect and Gaussian blur @ 4 radius.

Merge down. Duplicate the layer twice.

Apply Metalize Type 1, to the lowest text layer, Type 2 to the middle layer, Type 3 to the top layer.

image7[1].png

=========================================

Set the middle and top layers to Negation blending mode.

image8[1].png

========================================

Gaussian Blur all three text layers @ 2 radius.

Merge the middle text layer into the bottom text layer,

then merge the remaining upper text layer into the bottom text layer..

Apply AA's Assistant at default settings.

Use Gradient Mapping to colorize.

Be sure to have the Preserve Alpha box checked.

image9[1].png

========================================

The key is to apply enough blur at each step to eliminate

internal jagginess without blurring excessively.

Objects of different sizes, shapes, and gradients of different character

will require adjustments to these settings, blend modes, etc. to get

the best results.

==============================================

Can be used for jewelry making.

Regarding Gradient Mapping

Hidden Content:
Copy/paste the XML into this folder.

"C:\Users\<"Username">\Documents\Paint.NET User Files\Effect Presets\Gradient Mapping"

Then choose it from the top dropdown menu.

The Load button doesn't seem to work for loading the XML file.

(Maybe it has a different purpose.)

The Load button (and a long time ago, the neighboring Save button) were used for loading/saving settings from the whole dialog, including the gradient, input channel, and offset. When I added the preset system, I removed the save button, but kept the load functionality for people to "rescue" their old gradients. I should remove it now; it's been long enough.

Nice tutorial! A little confusing on the last picture, until I realized you duplicated the text layer and set layer properties to color burn. It was very interesting how you blurred the text and ran AA's assistant. I will use that method whenever I use text in the future.

here is my outcome (I had a little fun with the background):

Thanks, csm725.

pyrochild, I was wondering about the lack of a companion Save button. Thanks for explaining.

Nice 3D shiny, Heat Stroke.

j.d., you're welcome! Hope that you find this useful.

The alpha mask step is not working for me - see this link. I am getting a completely transparent Text layer - have tried twice and can't see where I'm going wrong.

That result would be expected if the Alpha Mask effect was applied with a clear clipboard.

Be sure that you haven't accidentally copied a blank new layer into the clipboard.

Renaming the layers by copy/paste could also be a cause of this type of problem.

Although not embellished, I love the results I got strictly from following your tutorial. Gold!

Thanks from a newbie!

A pretty good result!

If you delete this bit ?action=view&current= from the link it will take you straight to the image so that people cannot access the rest of your album & saves a lot more download.

Very nice results Sarkut. However, you lost me a bit back where you say:

Copy the Mask layer into the clipboard.

How do we do that?

Or is that explained where you say?:

On your keyboard, press:

Ctrl + A

Ctrl + C

Ctrl + D

If you or anyone who fully understands this tut can help me out I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance. :)

Sarkut is not around, I didn't see him for a while, and I hope he is alright, we really miss him.

I will try to explain with details about what he meant in the tute as much as I could:

OK, after you creating the Mask layer, copy it into the clipboard, and that means these steps :

Select Mask layer

On the menu bar:

Click Edit > Select All

Click Edit > Copy

Click Edit > Deselect

By doing the steps above you are copying the whole Mask layer to use it later in the Alpha Mask plugin to cut out the Text layer.

And yes that is what he meant by:

Ctrl+A

Ctrl+C

Ctrl+D

Those are shortcuts for the details above.

Hope it is clear.

Nice tutorial. I am a noob to PDN, and it took me a while to find your gradient mapping XML. However, I tried it with just yellow gold / curves. If you add in a layer with yellow/ gold and change its blending mode(to either multiply or color burn) you get the same result. You can also play around with curves(luminosity) a bit. This is only a way to avoid using gradient mapping. Here's my result:
