Paint.NET v3.0 Alpha 1 is now available

This is the first public test release for v3.0. To install this from v2.72, make sure that you enable File -> Updates -> Also check for pre-release (beta) versions.

Or download it here: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Pa ... 96481993/3

Since version 2.72, the following changes (and more) have been made:

Brand new Multiple Document Interface (MDI) with tabs that show thumbnails for all the opened images.
Colors window now supports a color palette, along with the ability to manage multiple named custom palettes
Colors window now uses value sliders that more clearly show how the color is being manipulated
Floating windows now better support docking and snapping, and remember their positions across sessions
Brand new icon and logo, including full 256x256 icon so that it looks great on Vista
Toolbar is context dependent: only the toolbar items relevant to the current tool are shown
Tolerance control moved to the toolbar
Ability to choose default values for toolbar items, as well as the tool that is selected at startup
Ability to draw with "smooth" or "sharp" text. Smooth text is good most of the time, and sharp text is good for when 'smooth' doesn't look good (sometimes for small text), or for doing GUI mockups
UI for update checking, downloading, and installing is better
"Edit -> Paste in to New Image" replaces "File->Acquire from Clipboard", and is accessible with Ctrl + Alt + V
Updates and Language commands moved to Help menu
History window now uses much less memory and significantly fewer User/GDI handles
Session temporary data is now compressed if the file system is NTFS. This results in less disk I/O and thus higher performance
Font list dropdown loads much quicker
.PDN file thumbnails upgraded to 256x256 (used to max out at 96x96), which looks great in Vista
Color Picker gives you the ability to choose what happens when you click: it can be set to switch to the Pencil tool
Move Selected Pixels tool allows you to choose between bilinear and nearest neighbor resampling
For expired pre-release builds (alphas and betas), you are now given the ability to check for and install the latest version from within the UI instead of having to go to the website
Various misc. UI tweaks and refinements
Eraser tool now takes into account the alpha value of the primary color
Selected area is no longer removed after flattening the image
Gutted and refactored large amounts of the code
    Dropped Windows 2000 support
    Dropped Itanium support

WOW!

Downloading now.

EDIT: is the adjustments drop down new? Never noticed it before.

also, can you make a new pallet? How?

Also, what is the hand for?

Other than that, great job. i love the new Tool: drop down.

EDIT 2: Would be cool if we could drag and drop the tabs to where we want to go (Create our own order)

Also, when the pallets become more than two lines, on the small view the third line and any others beyond that do not appear. Maybe they should?

Oh, and is this even the place to post about this stuff?

EDIT 3: i may be dense, and this may have been here before, but the ability to make the think you are doing transparaent is awsome, instead of having to do the entire layer.

It used to be in Layers->Adjustments.

also, can you make a new pallet? How?

Set colors you want and then click the arrow by the folder and selected "Save..."

Also, what is the hand for?

Pan tool. It is for scrolling. It is just more discoverable than holding down the spacebar, and we have room in the Tools window for it now.

Other than that, great job. i love the new Tool: drop down.

Thanks :)

EDIT 2: Would be cool if we could drag and drop the tabs to where we want to go (Create our own order)

Hah I knew this would be the first thing requested :) This may or may not make it in for v3.0, it is not a high priority at this point especially because of some other decisions that must be made regarding the usage of these thumbnails.

Also, when the pallets become more than two lines, on the small view the third line and any others beyond that do not appear. Maybe they should?

Nope that's what "More" is for.

Oh, and is this even the place to post about this stuff?

I prefer a separate post.

EDIT 3: i may be dense, and this may have been here before, but the ability to make the think you are doing transparaent is awsome, instead of having to do the entire layer.

I don't understand what you're referring to?

Will do.

Actually, never mind. They aren't the same things, but I do find them similar (which i like). i was referring to Layers>Opacity and Colour menu>transparency,

Looks good. Some minor glitches here and there but looks great. Multi-tab and selectable presetable palette is also kewl (was waiting for this quiet some time now :) )

Any chance to see supersampling as forcable selectable option under resize tool ? For some effects you just need supersampling...

I'm not sure if this ties in with what I have quoted, but it might be useful to have the ability to select some canvas pixels and then drag them into the MDI section where it would open what you dragged into a new image.

can we get a way to assign different functions to different keys in the final release?

Like So I can finally make wand W, lasso L, the marquee's M, and other stuff like that...

Other than that, I really like 3.0 so far.

Maybe now you should change the forum banner now that the logo has changed! Or are you waiting until version 3.0 is stable?

I had to pull the direct link for bandwidth reasons.

Try getting it from BetaNews, http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Pa ... 96481993/3 . I also updated the link above.
