How can I take an image and lighten (or darken) the whole thing?

I typically use this setting in image editors when a photo has been taken where there was too little light for a good exposure. If I lighten the image a little, a bad picture can come out to looking incredible.

Thanks for your help.

You can lighten images using the hue/saturation selector.

Thanks! That got it.

Curious: I'm using v2.70, but I could not find the Hue/Saturation settings on the menu bar. I would expect it to appear under the Effe&cts menu item, but nothing there seems to correspond to Hue or Saturation.

Not sure, cos I am having difficulty installing 2.70.

I am using 2.64. In this version h/s comes under layers/adjustments.

The Conditional Hue/Saturation "Effect" is a plugin. It can be found here

It allows you to select a color range and independently change the Hue/Saturation.
