I am new to this program and also new to photography, but I am no stranger to computers and creativity. I don't know how to use layers and need some guidance. Anyone want to share? Your time and knowledge are much appreciated!
How do you work with layers and what are the benefits?

well, I usually use layers when I want to edit just one part of my subject, for instance if I want to add words to my subject, and want it to glow, I make a layer for just the words so i can go back and edit fast if it clashes with anything in the drawing later, also so that the glow option doesn't make the whole subject glow. Another thing layers are used for, and the most common/important, is ordering of your renders (I hope I used that word right).

I use layers for editing specific things,
For example: I have a picture and want to paste something into it. I add a new layer, Blur what needs bluring, do some touch up. Maybe change the layer blend mode and move it down.

There are gigantic letters at the top of this very page saying "This forum is not for posting questions, comments, requests, or anything else that is not a tutorial."

The Doctor: There was a goblin, or a trickster, or a warrior... A nameless, terrible thing, soaked in the blood of a billion galaxies. The most feared being in all the cosmos. And nothing could stop it, or hold it, or reason with it. One day it would just drop out of the sky and tear down your world.
Amy: But how did it end up in there?
The Doctor: You know fairy tales. A good wizard tricked it.
River Song: I hate good wizards in fairy tales; they always turn out to be him.
