As requested from Here.

NOTE: Please also thank Madjik, SuperV & cjmcguinness For their ideas and help :D😎

Let's start with the easier one.

Bullet holes on something soft. (fabric and such)

1.jpg

1.Put Object on background.

2.New layer(so you can move the holes around later on)

3.Set brush size to approx. bullet hole size you want.

4.Fill with however many holes you like.

5.Frosted glass=2~3, Gaussian blur=1

2.png

6.Done. :) (Easy enough, right?)

You have passed Level 1. :)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next, Let's do Bullet holes on metals.

1.Make Metallic Background.

2.New layer (so you can move the holes around later on)

3.Use Ellipse Select :EllipseSelectTool: Hold Shift Key, Select the area of the Dents made by bullets.

4.Use Conical Gradient :ConicalGradient: (Hint: Shadow points to the light source, Light coming from upper right in image below.)

[Depending on the light source you can use Madjik's Method, Linear Gradient]

5.Repeat steps 3 & 4 as many times as needed.

6.Use Magic wand :MagicWandTool: to select everything but the Dents. (So we won't mess up the dents with next step)

7.Frosted glass=5~7, Deselect!!!, Gaussian blur=1~2 [or Use Oil painting as SuperV did in post below]

Yours should look something like this now.

3.jpg

8.New Layer, Set a Brush size Approx. Half of the Dents you just made. (If Dents=20 Pixels in Diameter then Hole=10 Pixels in Diameter Approx.)

9.Put a Black Dot in the middle of all the Dents.

10.Frosted glass=2~3, Gaussian blur=1 [or Use Oil painting as SuperV did in post below]

Done!!

Yours should look like image below too.

4.jpg

Now you have passed Level 2. :D

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next up, Bullet holes on Stone/Concrete walls and such.

1. Make the background.

5.jpg

2.Use :EraserTool: (Brush width=20) to Erase the part you want the bullet holes. I only did 2 in the tut, you can do as many as you like.

Use Drop shadow as settings in image below. (Again, it depends on where the light is coming from)

6.jpg

3.Add new layer--Move new layer down.

:RectangleSelectTool: Select area from top layer that is bigger then the holes you just made. Copy selection.

Paste it to the bottom layer. move it to the spot right under the holes.

7.jpg

4.Add new layer, Use Paint Brush (Color=black, Width=20) to "Dot" the bullet holes.

Use :FrostedGlass: Frosted Glass(2 pixels) then :GaussianBlur: Gaussian Blur(1 ~ 2 pixels)

8.jpg

Done! Now you've completed level 3.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank cjmcguinness for helping out :)

I have added some small adjustments & comments in Red

cjmcguinness said:
Gradient Barsplugin.

1. Make a 500 x 500 blank canvas.

Add new layer & work on the new layer so you can skip step 6, the hole would look more natural.

(the magic wand selection sometimes just doesn't do it right.)

2. Set Primary color to Black, Secondary color to Transparent

3. Use the rectangle select to select an area at the bottom of the canvas, the whole width, right up to 50px from the top

(essentially you are selecting the whole canvas except a 50px section all the way across the top)

4. EFFECTS > Gradient Bars: Top=0, Scale=100, Seed=0

5. CTRL+D to deselect and use the EFFECTS > Rectangular to Polar plugin.

6. Use the Magic Wand tool, Tolerance at 75% and click in the center of the white circle - press [Delete] Skipped

7. EFFECTS > Blurs > Zoom blur amount=50. I skipped this step too.

8. ADJUSTMENTS > Invert colors

Extra step 9. Majority plugin at default setting.

You now have a bullet hole that you can place over glass.

Thanks cjmcguinness again :)

Level 4 Finished

@Gefilus: Thanks :)

Yes nice, but where is the first episode?

I didn't make it clear on the title :P

What I mean is that....

There are 4 different Types I want to do:

1. Soft surface (cloth and such).---Done

2. Metal surface.---Done

3. Stone surface and such.---Got lazy, Do it later :P

4. Glass surface.---Have not tried yet, still thinking.

The way you do it is very nice too :)

Just 1 thing, it's a bit too "clean" for bullet holes (IMHO)

Frosted glass then Gaussian blur can give more of a burnt feel..

And some times the metal might not break so evenly.

I love the Linear Gradient you used :D

Thanks for showing me your version, this way people can pick from more then 1 way to do it!!

If I were to draw it again, I would keep my center and use your dents.

First of all, I'm new to the forum, but not to the program. I think Paint.NET has got a lot of potential. I'm Vittorio, from Italy, and I'm 13.

Yes nice, but where is the first episode?

This is my version:

Looks cool, but why don't you add a 1 or 2 "Frosted Glass" filter on the black circle?

--- My result ---

I did like MadJik, but without the gaussian blur and with the frosted glass filter. I rotated the layer to fit the bullet holes to the car. I also used oil painting filter.

I said that already, Did you read the tut? :?

Thats is very nice too :) I like it!

Can you post larger bullet holes images, so everyone can see clearly?

And post clear steps, so we can learn from what you do too. 8)

Edit: But keep in mind, different types of metals will behave differently.

When bullets are shot at it. Thickness will affect it too.

My tutorial :

THIS IS WHAT WE WANT TO ACHIEVE : rx8pacecar02vc1.png

1. :AddNewLayer: Create a new layer.

2. :EllipseTool: Create a filled black circle.

3. :EllipseSelectTool: Select another circle around it.

4. :LinearReflectedGradient: Fill the selection around the black circle with a gradient with the background image's colors.

5. :MagicWandTool: Select the black circle again.

6. :FrostedGlass: Apply a 1 or 2 frosted glass.

7. Copy several times the bullet holes.

8. :RotateZoom: Rotate the bullet holes' layer to make them more realistical.

9. :OilPainting: Apply a oil painting with maximum coarseness and 2 or 3 of brush size.

And, that's it!

Suggested method for creating bullet holes in glass.

I saw a photoshop tutorial that used this kind of method, but required an Stylise effect called Wind - PDN didn't have anything like it until the Gradient Barsplugin.

1. Make a 500 x 500 blank canvas.

2. Set Primary colour to Black, Secondary colour to Transparent

3. Use the rectangle select to select an area at the bottom of the canvas, the whole width, right up to 50px from the top (essentially you are selecting the whole canvas except a 50px section all the way across the top)

01_Canvas.png

4. EFFECTS > Gradient Bars: Top=0, Scale=100, Seed=0

02_Gradient.png

5. CTRL+D to deselect and use the EFFECTS > Rectangular to Polar plugin.

03_Rec2Pol.png

6. Use the Magic Wand tool, Tolerance at 75% and click in the centre of the white cirlce - press [Delete]

04_MagicWand.png

7. EFFECTS > Blurs > Zoom blur amount=50.

8. ADJUSTMENTS > Invert colours

You now have a bullet hole that you can place over glass.

Do show us some images.

Thanks :)

I have updated my earlier post with screenshots of the Bullet Holes in Glass procedure.

I have also added a couple of extra steps at the end.

Let me know what you think.
