Stone 101 a community tutorial for stone textures.

 

This is tutorial is a place for sharing stone texturing techniques.

Post only replies that offer a genuine variation of the technique or an alternative to it.

Please post an image of the finished texture before any description of the changed/new technique (I've used an image size of 200x150px for simple textures).

Here's another nice and simple texture: brushed concrete.

1. New Image

2. Effects>>Render>>Clouds:Scale 150, Roughness 0.72

3. Effects>>Stylize>>Edge Detect @ 45 degrees

4. Adjustments>>Invert Colors

You get pretty much the same effect with this method. I find it easy.

Paint bucket-fill mode 70% (primary color black, seconday white)

Frosted glass- Maximum scatter radius 5

Minimum scatter radius 5

Smoothness 2

Emboss- Angle 40

If you wanted some variation across the whole block you could use a cloud layer as per my original post. With the extra layer you can introduce some darker and lighter areas depending on the roughness and scale of the clouds:

Well, I don't really want to make a big tutorial with pictures and all. But here's how it goes:

1) Clouds - Defaults.

2) Height field to normal (viewtopic.php?t=2973).

3) Black and white.

4) Add new layer. Repeat steps 1, 2 and 3 in order.

5) Set blending mode to screen. Flatten.

6) Brightness/Contrast: -30-40/0

7) Repeat steps 4, 5, and 6 in order.

Outcome:

thats pretty good... it could be used as a cliff wall :)

1. :Clouds: clouds at default setting

2. :Emboss: emboss at -45 degree

3. reduce the canvas size by 2 pixels in width and height (with positioning setting to center) to remove the border

This seemed to work pretty well for a rocky planet.

start with an image that is two pixels larger than you want the final image to be.

1. Clouds at .60 roughness

2. Duplicate layer

3. Invert colors

4. change layer properties to difference

5. merge layer down

6. emboss (mess around with the angle until it looks right)

change the canvas size to two pixels less than you started with.

you can change the color if you want.

Great effect ! I love stone of any kind and I'm always looking for a new way to use it. This is what I came up with from this tut with a little additional fun stuff.

@ Possum Roadkill this stone texture is amazing , can you give me some tips on how did you make this if you don't mind? I really love it, I tried all step above but couldn't achieve what you did

I would be happy to. It's really very easy but very time consuming. Also you never get the same thing twice. Give me a day or so and I'll try to write up something. I just got my laptop back, my video card cooked last week. I've been using a borrowed laptop for the past few days. I'm glad you like it, I can't wait to see what you will be able to do with it, you do such amazing things on this board.

Sorry guys I've been tied up for a few days with annoying issues, long story involving train cars and politicians and an evil rich guy. Anyway, I'll try to make this as simple as I can and maybe someone can make this into a tut. I hope you don't mind but I'm going to send this to Yellowman in a PM and copy it to David Atwell so that they can look it over so I can stay out of trouble by posting a tut within a tut. It's been a long week. Thanks.

:Clouds: Render clouds, Scale 500, Roughness 0.75.

:Emboss: Emboss, Angle -45

:Colors: Use color tint or filter to add color, if desired.

I think I've found out how to make this texture. Maybe not exactly like it, but pretty close.

1. Run clouds on any settings. (you can mess with this to get different results)

2. Duplicate the layer.

3. Uncheck the top layer so that it's "invisible."

4. Median blur the bottom layer. Use a low percentile, 0-10. The radius is up to you. (you can play with these settings, too)

5. Emboss the bottom layer. If the line thing is pointed up, then the rock will be "stacked" down, with things like craters. If you point it downward, then you'll get results closer to the above.

6. Sepia the bottom layer. It should look pretty close to the above picture.

7. Re-check the top layer. It should just be clouds.

8. Median blur the top layer at the same settings you used on the bottom layer.

9. Set the blend mode of the top layer to overlay.

10. Turn down the opacity of the top layer to your liking.

I think this method works pretty well. I haven't found anything else that came as close. Does anyone else have any ideas about how this might work better?

Yes and no. I made all the text, but the actual background of the picture was something I already had. If you wanted, I could try to either post the picture somewhere, or I could (maybe - maybe) try to devise a method to make something like it.

I was actually thinking about doing this already. I might try, if i do, I'll PM you or post back here with an edit.

Sorry I had only been on the forum for a short while and did not want to break any rules.

I think I've found out how to make this texture. Maybe not exactly like it, but pretty close.

Nope, not even close. I would not have been able to think of such a clever method as your's at that point. Like I said, I had only been using PdN for a short time and really just lucked out on this effect. I have used it a number of times and it never comes out the same. In fact sometimes it comes out pretty ugly.

I gave your method a try and it created something really cool, but not quite the same, but something that I will use.

This is the method I used to create this texture as best as I can remember it. Keep in mind that at that time I had no idea what I was doing and was just messing around. So I might have forgotten something.

Start with a couple of similar but contrasting colors like brown and tan

use clouds default settings

duplicate layer three times

turn off all the layers except the top one

use the magic wand with it set around 30 %

select the either the lightest or darkest color and delete it so

it leaves patches of the other color.

turn on the second layer from the top and do the same

thing except try to leave bigger patches. I may have changed the

wand settings to get larger patches on the other layers.

work through the layers doing the same thing with each layer

getting bigger patches than the last.

When I get through the top layers, adjust colors to a little lighter or darker

and create another layer, duplicate it four times.

I do the wand select just the opposite for the bottom layers except the very last layer. I leave the last

layer as it is. Make sure you turn off the top layers while doing this.

Then turn off all the bottom color layers. Turn on the top layer colors

and merge them down to one layer. Magic wand select a blank area, invert the selection

and apply the relief effect. Turn off the top layer and repeat the

same step with the bottom layers except the very bottom layer that was not

cut up. Turn on the remaining bottom layer and run the relief on it.

At this point you can either flatten the image or you can run the feather on the three layers and then merge them down.

It all depends on the effect you are looking for. You will need to play around with the settings on the relief effect to get what you want.
