Plugins needed:

Alpha Mask Import

Drop Shadow Effect

Open image of desired size. I used 800x600px.

Create new layer for text.

Change your Primary Color to 7F7F7F(medium gray).

Now, add a blocky text in the relative center of the new layer. I used "Impact" Font at 200pt.

4

This part is kinda tricky.

We need to create a mask for later use. First, with the text layer selected, go to Adjustments>Curves and drag the nub to the very bottom right (255,1). This will make the text black. Then flatten your layers. Now go to Adjustments>Invert Colors. You should now have white text on a black background. Save this image as "ChromeMask.png" or something like that.

2

Now that the mask is saved we need to go back to the point where we first created our gray text. You can do this by selecting that point in the History window or hitting Ctrl+Z until your there.

5

Duplicate the Text layer. On the top text layer apply the Median Blur effect with the following settings:

Radius: 11

Percentile: 3

Now we are going to apply a few different Drop shadows to the top Text layer.

1st Drop Shadow:

Offset X: 1

Offset Y: 1

Blur Radius: 0

Color: Black

Keep original image: Yes

Now hit Ctrl+F 4 times.

2nd Drop Shadow:

Offset X: -1

Offset Y: -1

Blur Radius: 0

Color: White

Keep original image: Yes

Hit Ctrl+F 4 times again.

3

Gaussian Blur top Text layer 20px.

Flatten image.

Use the Alpha Mask Effect and select the mask image we made earlier("ChromeMask.png").

This gives us a nice Embossed text.

8

Create new layer and move it to the bottom. Fill this layer with white.

Select the Text layer and goto Adjustments>Curves. Use the following settings

7

Gaussian Blur Text layer 4px.

10

Flatten image.

Use the Alpha Mask Effect again and select the mask image("ChromeMask.png").

Now, goto Adjustments>Curves. Use the following settings

9

6

Duplicate Text layer and Gaussian Blur top Text layer 4px.

Change top Text Layer blending mode to "Lighten"

Create another new layer and move it to the bottom. Fill this layer with white.

Flatten image.

Use the Alpha Mask Effect again and select the mask image("ChromeMask.png").

Apply Drop Shadow:

Offset X: 0

Offset Y: 0

Blur Radius: 1-3

Color: Black

Keep original image: Yes

1

That's it! I know it was a lot, and there are probably a few steps that could be removed.

The effect you get can be easily modified by adjusting the settings you used for both Curve adjustments and the Drop shadow settings we used for the embossed text.

If you already have them installed then you shouldn't have to download and install them again. When you have Paint.NET open do they show up in the list of available Effects?
