Edit by pyrochild: For a version of this tutorial with images, go here.
==========================================================================================

The original had quite a few flaws, and the methods are now outdated anyway, so here's a revised second edition of my original tutorial. Don't even bother looking at the original, as I removed all of the images from my photobucket, and a mod will probably delete it soon. This will teach you how to render certain objects from images with complicated backgrounds. Listen and learn, grasshoppers.

Here we go!

Optional: After feathering, drop a few shadows (X: 0, Y: 0, Blur:1) on the render. This tends to look good if the render is a vector or colored drawing, not a photo.

Ironically also the quickest one I've ever made. Which is why I made the error of switching numbers and colons on one of the buttons. Also, one of them needs anti-aliasing. But I'm not gonna fix it. At least not today.

I need to go get some :mtdew:. I'm thirsty.

Hi Tendercrisp,

Great simplification of the steps! This should be stickied as it is clear and effective and useful!

But perhaps only after clearer fonts are used for the instructions - quite a lot of effort required to read the good instructions.

No the first one told you to draw the line on the same layer, as opposed to the layer above it, and it also required you to use a background behind the picture that was dyed whatever color your line was. It also told you to flatten the image before you deleted the colored BG, leaving a crappy residue of whatever color around your object. This way is quicker, more efficient, and leaves a cleaner cut.

You should mention the feather plugin somewhere in the tutorial (either beginning or end).

Um, I did. At the end. It's one of the few parts that I actually typed.

No problem.

Just so you guys know, this method is useful and maybe even necessary for making popup sigs like the one I am currently using.

I requested that a mod delete it since it's useless now. And besides, the thread turned to spam after page 10 when people started posting unrelated bloody potato.
