The best are Rick and the plugging developers.  

You can use TR's Drum effect to transform a square image into a round one

Or the Polar transformation effect.

anyway the polar didn't make what i wanted.

the 3D suppose to appear different i guess.

Like the subject gif it need to emphasize the surface.

I'd like to be proved wrong, but I really doubt that can be done with anything currently in PDN. I think it was done with a polygon renderer.

I think we need an effect similar to zoom blur that would trail dependent upon the images tonal values.
These are all Pdn but wrapping them around a sphere doesn't quite work (yet).

I tried to map Red's 2nd gif into a sphere, but too tough to make it seamless..

Planetoid can be used to wrap a texture around a sphere (link in my signature).

 

To create a spinning animation, there is this technique

The main problem I can see is that shape 3d will always map to a perfectly flat sphere. For the depth illusion to work you really need the circumference to follow the heights in the image.
Like in Eli's tutorial and this one by Pdnnoob .3d extrusion from a sphere

A 'radial trail' based on src tone might do that... I know what I mean but tricky to describe!

How do you wrap a texture around a sphere using planetoid ? tried and failed to find how to load a texture

Load your texture into the active layer then run Planetoid. Turn off or Hide all the feature layers.

 

If Planetoid doesn't render anything (ocean, land, mountains etc...) over the active layer it shows through

i tried to use the Trail3d and it gave me just a triangle outside the sphere...

Well, I got this half sphere after digging it.

but i use TR's 3d and Ego's planetoid without the 3D trail.

As MJW previously mentioned it is probably impossible to exactly recreate the first gif you posted (with the current effects available for Pdn).

I did some experiments using Pyrochild's 'Liquify' effect to distort a sphere. Then saving the 'mesh' file and applying that to each frame in an animation.
Mixed results... unfortunately animations take so much time to make! But it is another effect to consider experimenting with.

You're better off using a 3-D program like blender for this. I used blender a few years back to make this 3-D baseball.

 

 

The original is much larger and smoother. I reduced size and framerate to make the file smaller.

i think it's more special from the subject gif.

here i can see the accuracy of all the idea of the kind of spheres.

I guess the complexity to make such gif is hard to understand quickly.

I will be glad if i knew to make such as sphere like this
