Hi there guys, I've recently had an issue with paint.net and would really appreciate any help to get it running again. It is a fantastic program and this is the first time I've had an issue with it.

I tried opening it as usual today but was greeted with a crash and the pdncrash txt was automatically generated. Here's the log:

I decided to uninstall it and download the newest version. Perhaps it was just time to upgrade. However, upon trying to run the installer it crashes right after extraction and before any setup windows can open. A picture of the log is attached.

I've googled around but could not quite find anything. Maybe I did not look hard enough. I have restarted and shut-down, as well as tried a few other things like repairing the frameworks, but to no avail. I hope you kind souls can help me with this.

Thank you very much!

System.OutOfMemoryException

You have plenty of RAM (8 GB). How much of that is free memory? You may have a misbehaving program running that using all your memory.

You should consider upgrading to Windows 8.1 too; it's a free upgrade from Windows 8.

Forced? You probably mean tricked. Microsoft forced it on no one.

Why does your crashlog show Windows 8?

That's odd if you have 4.7 GB free. Maybe try installing paint.net in Windows Safe Mode.

It says Windows 8 in the log because 3.5.10 doesn't have Win10 compatibility listed in its application manifest. So, Windows lies to it for "compatibility" reasons (ha).

Uninstall, reboot, manually nuke c:\program files\paint.net, reboot, then try installing again.

My only guess is that you have some corrupt file sitting in paint.net's Resources directory, which is used for resource file overrides (strings, images, icons).

If that's not it ... no idea. GDI+ just gets into a conniption fit every so once in awhile and says "out of memory" even though that's clearly not the problem.

Ah, makes sense. It has been quite a while since I've updated Paint.Net.

Well, I deleted the folder, rebooted, and tried again but unfortunately it still gives me the issue. A bit sad, but barring a system restore or PC reset it seems like I shall have to look for a different program to use for now.

Thanks for the help guys! Looking forward to the day I get Paint.NET working again. :)

Before you give up, try running this utility https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/mats/program_install_and_uninstall. It will remove any traces of the previous installation. Then you can try a fresh install.
