  1. Many thanks to you for your valuable advice! I tried Remove Background, and it did work very well with the sample I gave you as well as others, which were more difficult to separate. Great tool, but I don't like tools which require online connections all time. A plugin doing the same would be really great. I'll check out your other suggestions now. Thnx, Armin.
  2. Hi experts, please forgive this very basic question of an occasional user, and maybe I could have found the answer myself somewhere. I have two pictures (see attached file), on two layers. I used the magic wand to cut out the tomato, and then moved it over the background. You see the jagged edges. The original picture was anti-aliased, so the wand had difficulties finding exact edges. I played with the magic wand settings, and you see the best result I achieved, but it is far from perfect. How can I achieve a smoother blending of the edges? Thnx, Armin.
  3. Hi Iron, tanks for your input. I do, however, think that this approach is not a real enhancement in my scenario, but just replacement of one cumbersome solution, which has unwanted side effects, with a different one. Armin
  4. Hi all, I am trying to use Paint.Net as kind of sketchbook (in conjunction with a digitizer-tablet), and have a quick question about how to increase usability for me: - if I drag a selection box over an area I wish to delete, and press "del", the box gets cleared, and the transparent color pattern appears. I find this annoying; i want the deleted ara filled solid white, to resemble a real sheet of paper's behaviour. The only solution coming to my mind so far was adding another layer, filling it solid white, and stacking it behind my drawing layer. This works, but it makes my sheet a 2 layer thing, which is cumbersome to set up (create a new sketch) and also creates difficulties when saving/exporting it to different drawing formats. Any way to get what I want? Delete the outlined area, and fill it solid white? Thnx, Armin.
  5. Hi guys, Finally the problem got - somewhat - solved. Yesterday I let Microsoft push Windows 10.0.14393 "Anniversary Update" onto the affected machine, and the problem mysteriously went away. Paint.net installed correctly right away this morning. Unfortunately, since this "solution" essentially was a complete OS reinstall, this leaves too many room for speculations about possible causes of the problem, and stabbing in the dark is of no help for others, who are struggling with installation issues, so I don't. Nevertheless, my problem does not exist any more, and I am happy to have my favourite drawing tool back (in the meantime I fell back to Gimp, which ist kind of overkill for my needs). Thanks for your attempts to help, Armin.
  6. Hi, checked again today. The file you mention is definitiely not created anywhere on my machine, I scanned the whole harddrive for the file name and found nothing, neither in %temp% nor elsewhere. I found an empty directory "pdnSetup" in %temp%, and the %temp%\pdnSetupShim.log file, file and directory creation dates match my last installation attempt, but not the one log file you need. Another scan of my harddrive showed that "setupngen.exe" doesn't exist as well. What else can I do to track this? Thx, Armin.
  7. Sorry to say this, but tat file does not exist on my system. Guess the installer creashes even before it can be created. Armin.
  8. Thanks for your efforts, guys! I ran pdn1603diag again, and In %temp% a file "pdnSetupShim.log" was created, I guess that's the one you need. Furthermore, after the failed attempt, there is a c:\program files\paint.net\staging folder left over, which contains "PaintDotNet_x64_????????.msi" files. Just to make sure it's not a permissions issue I went through the custom install and set the target directory to a directory my user has full access to - same error. I also made an attempt to track your installer using Sysinternal's Procmon. The trace shows an attempt to execute SetupNgen, exe from the paint.net directory, but the file can't be found. Interesting though, I found no attempt to create this file as well. Maybe this info misleads, maybe it helps, just in case it does, I uploaded the Procmon log as well: http://www.arminlinder.de/temp/procmonlog.csv If I can be of further help, please let me know. Thx for your efforts, Armin.
  9. Hi guys, seems I am a victim of the dreaded "1603" install failure too, though I think the causes are different. I attach the installation log, and from what I can see the symptoms are different from those described above. My environment is: - OS WIndows 10 TP2 x64 (fresh install yesterday), so there is absolutely no chance there is any old version of paint.net possibly on this machine -.net FW 4.5 is surely installed, since it is part of the OS - machine has plenty of free ram and HD storage - install startet with admin privileges - virus scanner disabled There isn't anything else I can think of an end user can do to fulfill the installer's requirements. Can you guys please look into the attached log and give me any clue what's going wrong? The first error is an error 3, which translates, usually, to "file not found". But this may be misleading, and the code is useless anyway without a file name. (Sorry, no attachment, board software won't let me, "file of this type not allowed", "too large"). Here is a direct download link: http://www.arminlinder.de/temp/pdn.log) Thx, Armin
  10. Hi folks, I admit that I spent only around 30 minutes on researching the web and this forum, and that I am only an occasional user of Paint.net, so I probably miss something or ask a question already asked a thousand times before, but ... I failed to print a paint.net document in portrait orientation, the picture is always scaled to landscape. The whole story is: I aquired a whole page from my scanner via the "aquire" menu, and the scan appears correctly on screen (upright, like the sheet is positioned in thze scanner). the canvas settings do also clearly reflect an upright/portrait orientation with the width beeing significantly smaller than the height. I checked all four settings (Image-Resize and Image-Canvas SIze), and all 4 are OK. As soon as I try to print this page (tried 3 different printers and a pdf printer driver) the page orientation does automatically change to landscape, though all print settings are correctly set to portrait, and any other program I tried does print portrait orientation. I guess this might have something to do with the paint.net print settings dialog: I am forced to pick a "layout" from a list of predefined layouts at the right of the dialog. Layout names are like "Full Paper Photo", "Wallet" and "Contact Sheet". there is no layout named "simply print this on a plain sheet of paper". The layout which comes closest to what I want is "Full paper photo", but the layout preview shows the sheet rotated sideways, and this is exactly how the sheet prints. Anyone who can help me out ... how can I make paint.net just print what is on screen, or - alternatively - define custom layouts so I can add a plain upright paper sheet to the list of available layouts? And, btw, why is this quite obvious "layout" missing at all - I hardly can image that there is nobody out there who wishes to print onto a plain vanilla portrait orientated sheet of office paper. I user paint.net 4.0.5 (final) in Windows 7 x64. Thx Armin.
  11. Hi PDN creators, first let me express my appreciation, excellent work you've done with Paint.net. One thing I'd like to see is rulers ("dashed helper lines") (draggable from the side rulers, and an option button to turn them on/off), and (optionally) the cursor snapping to them when it comes close. The functionality is further enhanced by having a draggable zero in the side rulers, and beeing able to activate (click) the helper lines and move them Pixel by Pixel using the cursor keys instead of the mouse. Why? I think rulers are a generic and intuitive way to aid many tasks like accurate positioning, aligning, measuring and such. The idea came to me when I wanted to cut out a round shaped image (a Smiley, in fact). It takes a lot of fiddling until you have positioned the elipsoid selection tool to just touch the SMiley. Having helper lines you simply drag one to touch each side of the Smiley, and then drag the elipsoid selection tool from one corner diagonally to the opposite, done. I think I miss this functionality mainly because I have been working with CAD applications a lot, and got used to having them, but somehow I think that many others would love them too. I can, of course, add an extra layer and put some helper lines on it using the line tool, but having really functional rulers would be handier. Also another CAD idea is that you rarely have a situation where you can accurately position a circle by dragging a square, because in most cases the corner points of the surroundng square are unknown. Sometimes the center of a circle is known, and it woud be handy to be able to drag the radius from there. Thumbs up Armin. P.S. I saw a request to implement Office-like ribbons. I herewith wish to file a request not to implement any of those useless, screen-space wasting gimmicks Microsoft has brought into their products, neither the ribbons not their twisted idea to redefine menus. Of course users get used to it after some time, like you learn to live with hemorrhoids after a while, and people born with hemorrhoids will probably even think this was the only possible way of living and assume all those who don't have it are seriously missing something, I just want to let you know I think otehrwise, and one reason why I love PDN is its interface, may it be "old fashioned" or not. When it comes to tools, I prefer simplicity of use, nothing else really matters.
